Frequently Asked Questions
Use the chat bot or reach out to your recruiter if you have any further questions.
What is the nature of the work like in the program?
As an AFDP Associate, you will have rewarding and challenging work that will enable you to develop your leadership and technical skills, while helping you drive your career forward. You will be an integral part of a Finance team, working closely with other associates as well as leaders at all levels. You will have the ability to own and drive projects, develop in-depth analysis, and contribute to your team in a meaningful way.
What extent is “ownership of work” expected given the rotational nature of the program?
Ownership of work is a fundamental expectation of the program, regardless of rotation. Rotations are designed to be approximately 18 months to enable you to fully immerse yourself into the responsibilities of your team. This time allows you to quickly become an effective and productive team member, owning your assignments as well as driving projects along the way. Transition timing is communicated in advance, so you and your manager can plan accordingly to wrap up projects or plan for a smooth handoff of assignments.
What is a leadership mentor?
Mentorship is a critical developmental aspect of the AFDP, and as an associate, you are paired with a leader as part of a formal mentorship. The leader can provide coaching and guidance to help you progress in your development and meet specific goals you have in place. In addition, a peer mentor will help guide and support you as you are getting settled in the program and learning about Unum.
How many rotations can I expect throughout the program?
The AFDP is typically a five-to-six-year program, and you can expect three to four rotations of approximately 18 months each.
Why does the program require professional certifications?
As a leadership development program, the AFDP has higher expectations for both professional development and performance. A professional certification such as the CPA or CFA demonstrates your investment in your own professional development and building your financial acumen. To support your success in the program, we offer comprehensive exam support and incentives as you are working toward your credential.
What kind of rotations are offered in AFDP?
The AFDP offers a variety of rotations to support your development including experiences in General Accounting, Tax, Financial Reporting, Financial Planning & Analysis, Treasury & Capital Markets, Investment Accounting, Finance Technology, and Reinsurance. More rotation experiences will be offered as this program continues to grow.
What is a hybrid workforce approach?
We follow a flexible hybrid work schedule including a mix of in-office and remote workdays to support our associates’ important balance between work and life. We also recognize that the collaboration, networking, and interaction that takes place in the office with other colleagues is invaluable in continuing to support your development and strengthen our community.
How are future rotations determined?
Selecting rotations is a collaborative process between the associate and the program leadership. You are able to share your preferences on your most desired rotations, and the program leaders will match those based on business need and your development goals. Rotations are designed to provide you a well-rounded experience across a broad range of financial functions.
